MP Nazrul’s 2nd wife uncle sent to jail

A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent Obaidur Rahman, uncle of the second wife of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, to jail in a case filed over her alleged suicide.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order after Obaidur was produced before the court in the evening.

Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Mohammad Salahuddin, also the investigating officer of the case, sought an order to keep him in custody.

Obaidur was arrested earlier in the day from the SRB Mirpur area and subsequently handed over to the DB.

The case was filed by S M Masum Billah, father of Nazrul Islam’s second wife, Mariyam Akter, accusing the MP, his first wife Maksuda Islam and Obaidur of abetting her suicide under Section 306 of the Penal Code.

According to the case statement, Mariyam married Gazi Nazrul Islam under Islamic law in June this year. Her father alleged that she was subjected to physical and mental abuse by her husband and his first wife after the marriage.

The complaint says Mariyam had informed family members about the alleged abuse through phone calls and messages.

According to the FIR, on September 20 at around 5:30pm, Gazi Nazrul Islam called Mariyam’s father and asked him to come to his residence. Upon arriving, he allegedly found several people there and was later informed that Mariyam had hanged herself with a scarf from a ceiling fan in a room.

A handwritten suicide note was allegedly found on Mariyam’s bed, according to the FIR. The complaint says the note referred to alleged betrayal and mental distress, and was addressed to her husband.

Mariyam’s father alleged that Obaidur had directly encouraged the marriage between his daughter and Gazi Nazrul Islam. He further alleged that Mariyam took her own life after enduring physical and mental abuse by her husband and his first wife.

Earlier, another court had granted four days’ remand for Gazi Nazrul Islam and one day’s remand for his first wife, Maksuda Islam, in the case. After the remand period, Maksuda was sent to jail on Tuesday.

The allegations are subject to investigation and judicial proceedings.
