DHAKA: Information Adviser Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman has said the proposed Cybersecurity Law has not yet been finalized and remains open to changes and amendments.

He made the remarks on Saturday at a discussion meeting on proposed amendments to the Cybersecurity Law and the review and recommendations of the Bangladesh Journalists Council (BJC).

Dr. Zahed said Bangladesh needs a cybersecurity law that protects citizens while also addressing the spread of misinformation online. He emphasized the importance of improving media literacy among the public to help combat misinformation.

He said the proposed legislation has not yet been finally passed, leaving room for further discussion, review and necessary amendments.

The adviser also stressed the need to bring emerging forms of online journalism and digital monetization within an appropriate policy framework, noting the rapid growth of new forms of online journalism.

He further said that if rumors, falsehoods or misinformation are spread, the same legal framework should apply equally to everyone. Law enforcement, he said, should not differentiate between supporters and opponents but should operate under a uniform legal framework.

The meeting also discussed proposed amendments to the Cybersecurity Law, the BJC’s review of the legislation and various recommendations.
