Police have arrested Bishu Mondal, alleged head of the “Bishu Gang” and a member of an international human trafficking network, in Muksudpur of Gopalganj.

A team of Special Response Battalion (SRB)-6 arrested him during a raid in the Baghadia area of Muksudpur around 9:45pm on Saturday, the battalion said in a press release.

According to SRB-6, Mondal allegedly used to lure people with promises of sending them to Italy for work. In one case, he allegedly took Tk 2 lakh and later another Tk 12 lakh from a man, along with his passport, promising to send him to Italy.

The victim was allegedly flown from Dhaka to Dubai in November 2023 and then taken to Egypt and Libya. According to the complaint, Mondal’s associates later handed him over to an international mafia group.

The victim was allegedly tortured, and a video of the abuse was sent to his family, who were then asked to pay Tk 25 lakh as ransom.

After the family paid the ransom, the victim was released but was allegedly handed back to the mafia group later. A second video of his alleged torture was sent to the family, and another Tk 25 lakh was demanded, according to the complaint.

The victim later filed a complaint with the Gopalganj Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Prevention and Suppression Tribunal. Following the tribunal’s order, a case was filed with Muksudpur Police Station against Mondal and others under the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Act.

SRB-6 said Mondal had previously faced cases under the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Act and the Narcotics Control Act.

Muksudpur Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Motiur Rahman said Mondal faces several human trafficking cases.

He was sent to the Gopalganj Judicial Magistrate’s Court, the police official added.
