Police have detained 254 people in a fresh crackdown against teenage gangs and juvenile offenders across Cumilla, taking the total number detained in two rounds of operations to 878.
The latest operation was conducted simultaneously in all 18 police stations of the district from Saturday evening until midnight, said Cumilla Additional Superintendent of Police Md Lutfur Rahman.
Police said the detainees are being screened to determine their involvement in previous crimes, after which legal action will be taken where necessary.
The latest drive came after a 13-year-old boy, Ishayat Shahriar Opritom, was killed in Cumilla, renewing concerns over the activities of teenage gangs in the district.
In the first phase of the crackdown on September 23, police detained 624 people in the district.
After verification, 451 were released into the custody of their guardians on bonds, while 173 were sent to court over allegations including drug use, involvement in criminal cases, links to a banned organisation and outstanding arrest warrants.
Police said similar operations against teenage gangs and juvenile offenders will continue regularly across the district.
