The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has summoned retired Major General Tarique Ahmed Siddique, former military adviser to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, for questioning over an alleged Tk250 crore embezzlement from the third terminal project at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

He has been asked to appear at the ACC headquarters at 10am on October 7.

ACC Assistant Director and investigation officer Mahmudul Hasan Shubhra issued the notice on Tuesday (September 29), asking Siddique to appear to have his statement recorded under Section 19 of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2004 and Section 160 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The notice relates to Case No. 83 filed with the ACC’s Integrated District Office, Dhaka-1, on January 27, 2025.

According to the notice, Siddique and other accused allegedly embezzled Tk250 crore from the expansion project of the airport’s third terminal through collusion. The ACC said his statement was necessary for a proper investigation into the allegations.

The ACC filed four separate cases on January 27, 2025, against 19 people over alleged embezzlement and corruption involving a total of Tk812 crore in development projects at three airports.

Ten people were accused in the third-terminal case, including former senior secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism Muhibul Haque, former joint secretary Janendranath Sarker, former Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh chairman M Mofidur Rahman, former chief engineer Abdul Malek and superintendent Habibur Rahman.

The other accused are Aerones International owner Lutfullah Mazed, managing director Mahbub Anam, project director AKM Maksudul Islam and former chief engineer Sudhendu Bikash Goswami.

According to the case statement, the contract for the third-terminal project was awarded to Aviation Dhaka Consortium (ADC). The ACC alleges that Aerones International was later unlawfully appointed as a subcontractor.

The project’s estimated cost was allegedly increased from Tk13,000 crore to Tk21,000 crore, and the accused allegedly embezzled Tk250 crore through collusion, according to the ACC.

On the same day, the commission filed another case over alleged embezzlement of Tk200 crore from the radar installation project, including the CNS-ATM system, at Shahjalal airport. Two further cases involved alleged corruption of Tk150 crore in the Cox’s Bazar airport terminal and runway project and Tk212 crore in a project at Sylhet Osmani International Airport.

On July 17, 2025, the ACC filed four more cases against Siddique, his wife and two daughters over alleged acquisition of assets disproportionate to their known sources of income.

In the case against Siddique, the ACC alleged that he acquired Tk28.59 crore in assets beyond his known income. It also alleged suspicious transactions totalling Tk62.01 crore through four of his bank accounts.

Siddique served as Sheikh Hasina’s military adviser from 2009 until the fall of her government on August 5, 2024, following a mass uprising. The ACC subsequently began investigating corruption allegations involving members of his family.
