A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent Mizanur Rahman, son-in-law of Jamaat-e-Islami MP Abdul Gafur, to jail in a case filed over vandalism, looting and theft at a New Guinea Properties Limited project in South Manikdi near ECB Chattar.
Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman passed the order following a petition by the investigation officer, said Prosecution Department SI Tarek-ur Rahman.
Mizanur was arrested by a team of the DB’s Gulshan division from his residence in West Matikata on Monday afternoon. Jamaat MP Abdul Gafur was also reportedly present at the house at the time of the arrest, according to AFM Anwar Hossain Khan, deputy commissioner of the DB’s Gulshan division.
Police have so far reported the arrest of seven people in the case. Two were arrested by the DB and five by Cantonment police.
Cantonment Police Inspector Subrata Debnath, the investigation officer, produced Mizanur before the court on Tuesday and sought his detention in jail. His lawyer, Shawkat Hossain, sought bail and requested a hearing on Wednesday. The court sent Mizanur to jail and scheduled the bail hearing for Wednesday.
Earlier, Shahriar Mahmud and Shah Alam were sent to jail on Monday. A day earlier, the court sent three others—Md Mamun, Md Aslam and Md Munna—to jail. A hearing on the police’s five-day remand plea for them has been scheduled for Wednesday.
The New Guinea Properties project in South Manikdi was attacked and vandalised on Saturday night, with allegations of looting and theft. Content creator Salman Muqtadir’s Brownfish Studio, located within the project, was also attacked.
Saiful Islam Bhuiyan, a director of New Guinea Properties, filed the case with Cantonment Police Station. Thirteen people, including retired Major General Golam Mahyuddin Chowdhury, were named as accused, while another 150 to 200 unidentified people were also accused.
Police said an initial investigation has pointed to a dispute over control and possession of land. However, the specific cause of the incident will be established after a full investigation.
