A Dhaka court has placed three people, including the son-in-law of Jamaat-e-Islami MP Abdul Gafur, on three-day remand in a case filed over an alleged attack, vandalism and looting at a New Guinea Properties housing project in the capital.

The remanded suspects are Md Mizanur Rahman, son-in-law of Kushtia-2 MP Abdul Gafur, Shahriar Mahmud, 60, and Md Shah Alam alias Anik, 47.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monirul Islam passed the order on Thursday (October 1) after hearing the investigation officer’s petition. Police had sought five days’ remand for questioning the suspects.

According to the prosecution, the suspects were arrested in connection with the September 26 attack at the New Guinea Properties project in South Manikdi, near ECB Chattar, under Cantonment police station.

The case statement says around 50 people allegedly entered the project area unlawfully, fired about 50 rounds and attacked people with machetes, knives and sticks. Several people, including site engineer Md Parvez, were seriously injured.

The attackers allegedly looted cash, laptops, computers, BRB cables, cameras and professional media equipment, and vandalised vehicles. The complaint estimates the company’s losses at Tk 1.43 crore, while stolen goods were valued at around Tk 1.50 crore.

The attackers also allegedly entered, vandalised and looted content creator Salman Muqtadir’s “Brown Fish” studio located on the premises.

Police said the attackers also opened fire at officers who arrived at the scene. Police fired five shotgun rounds in self-defence and to bring the situation under control.
