Seven people have been arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka for allegedly bringing gold jewellery, mobile phones, laptops and cigarettes into the country illegally, the Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBN) said.
According to an APBN press release issued Saturday night, the seized items include around 67 bhori of gold jewellery, 10 mobile phones, two laptops and three cartons of cigarettes.
The arrested individuals were identified as Tofazzal Hossain, 37; Jasim Uddin, 39; Arafat Hossain, 28; Arif, 42; Md Alamin Gazi, 37; Rupban Begum, 39; and MA Matin, 30.
APBN said its first operation was conducted on the northern side of the airport roundabout following a tip-off. Five suspects—Tofazzal, Jasim, Arafat, Arif and Alamin—were arrested while allegedly attempting to flee after noticing the presence of law enforcement.
A search allegedly recovered 484.2 grams of gold jewellery, two laptops, eight mobile phones and three cartons of cigarettes from them, the statement said.
In a separate operation near Arrival Canopy No. 2, officers detained Rupban Begum after allegedly finding her moving around the area suspiciously. Police said 98.7 grams of gold jewellery and a mobile phone were recovered from her possession.
In a third operation on the western side of the main entrance roundabout, APBN detained MA Matin and allegedly recovered 198.4 grams of gold jewellery and a mobile phone during a search.
According to APBN, the detainees told investigators that the gold jewellery had been brought into Bangladesh through passengers arriving from abroad for the purpose of smuggling.
The agency alleged that the arrested individuals had been working as receivers for the smuggling network.
Three cases have been filed against the suspects with Airport Police Station, APBN said.
