Ziaul’s solo prison van transfer ‘dangerous’, lawyer tells tribunal

Former Major General Ziaul Ahsan’s lawyer and sister, Naznin Nahar, has told the International Crimes Tribunal that transporting him alone in a prison van is dangerous and raises serious security concerns.

During a hearing at ICT-1 on Thursday, Nahar urged the tribunal to order that Ziaul be transported to court alongside other accused persons instead of being taken separately.

She said the law-and-order situation was not good and that an accident or other incident could occur during the journey.

According to Nahar, Ziaul had previously been brought to the tribunal with other accused persons but has been transported alone since September 16.

She questioned why he was being singled out when other accused were not being transported separately.

Prosecutor Gazi Monawar Hossain Tamim opposed the request, saying Ziaul could instead participate in proceedings virtually from jail if there were concerns about his security.

Ziaul, who was present in the dock, was allowed to speak and alleged that transporting him alone was intended to create an incident and later put the blame on him.

The tribunal did not issue an immediate order on the application.

Ziaul is facing trial over allegations of crimes against humanity, including enforced disappearances and killings of more than 100 people during the previous Awami League government.
