Police arrested 25 people during a large-scale operation in the remote Padma River char areas of Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia on Friday, targeting suspected criminal activities, illegal occupation and disputes over territorial control.

Around 200 police personnel took part in the operation, which began early Friday morning and continued until noon across the char areas of Ramkrishnapur, Chilmari, Philipnagar and Moricha unions.

Faisal Mahmud, additional superintendent of police in Kushtia, said most of those detained were accused in multiple cases and had outstanding arrest warrants against them.

Police will interrogate the detainees to determine whether any have links to active criminal or terrorist groups, he said, adding that no firearms, ammunition or drugs were recovered during the operation.

According to police sources, isolated stretches of the Padma’s char areas have long been used as hideouts by criminal groups involved in disputes over sand extraction sites, drug and firearms trafficking, crop looting and armed clashes over territorial dominance.

The latest crackdown was aimed at disrupting these activities and improving security in the remote riverine communities.

Police have not disclosed further details about the identities of those arrested or the specific cases against them.
