An International Crimes Tribunal is scheduled to deliver its order today on framing charges against 26 accused in a crimes against humanity case over the killing of 11 people, including student activist Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdh, during the July 2024 uprising in Dhaka’s Uttara.
The case involves the alleged killings on July 18 and 19, 2024. According to the prosecution, Mugdh, a student of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), was shot dead on July 18 while helping injured protesters and distributing water and biscuits among demonstrators.
Former Dhaka-18 lawmaker Habib Hasan and several former police officials are among the accused.
Of the 28 people named in the case, eight have been arrested and are in custody, while 18 remain absconding.
The tribunal had previously deferred the order several times before fixing October 11 for the decision.
The prosecution alleges that 11 people were shot dead in Uttara during the uprising. The accused have yet to be convicted, and the tribunal’s order will determine whether formal charges are framed against the 26 accused.
