The trial of former military officer Ziaul Ahsan, accused in more than 100 cases of enforced disappearance and murder during the Awami League government, will continue virtually from prison due to security concerns.

He was not brought before the International Crimes Tribunal on Tuesday, October 13, despite being scheduled to appear in person. The tribunal will now conduct his trial through virtual proceedings while he remains in custody.

On October 8, Ziaul Ahsan’s defence lawyer told the tribunal that transporting him in a prison van without additional security could put his life at risk.

The prosecution, in response, suggested holding the trial virtually while keeping him in prison to ensure his safety.

The case is the first enforced disappearance trial before the International Crimes Tribunal and is nearing its conclusion.

The prosecution has claimed that it has successfully established all the allegations against Ziaul Ahsan.
