A Dhaka court on Wednesday rejected the bail petition of a 17-year-old boy in a case over the death of construction worker Mehedi Hasan Mim, who was hit by a car while resting on a footpath in Baridhara.

Judge Md Abdul Moktadir of Dhaka Children’s Court-8 passed the order after a hearing, said state prosecutor Mohammad Sharif Uddin (Mamun).

The defence sought bail on the grounds that the accused was a child and that a settlement had been reached with the complainant.

The complainant was also present in court. However, the prosecution opposed the petition, and the court rejected it, the prosecutor said.

Former Dhaka Bar Association president Khorshed Mia Alam argued for the teenager. The same court had also rejected his bail petition on October 4.

On September 22, around 5pm, a speeding private car lost control and ran over 24-year-old Mehedi Hasan Mim as he rested on a footpath on Road No. 1 in the Baridhara Diplomatic Zone. He was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

People at the scene detained the teenager, who was behind the wheel, and handed him over to police. After questioning, he was released into his uncle’s custody that night.

Mehedi’s brother, Moktadir Islam, filed a case with Gulshan Police Station on September 23. The case named driver Akash Mark as an accused but did not mention the teenager who had been driving the car.

Following public criticism, police took the teenager into custody on September 23. The following day, the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Arefin Islam, produced him before the court and sought his detention at a juvenile development centre.

The court ordered that he be sent to the Tongi Juvenile Development Centre in Gazipur. The teenager’s lawyer, Alamgir Hossain, later told journalists that the case had been settled for Tk 900,000.
