A clash broke out between prosecution and defence lawyers during the bail hearing of Al Nur Mohammad Ayas and Marzia Khandaker Rimi at a Dhaka court on Wednesday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Riad Hasan temporarily left the courtroom amid the commotion before returning to resume proceedings.

The hearing concerned a case filed over the alleged defacement of a graffiti portrait of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore on a wall opposite Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital’s Segunbagicha area.

According to court reports, tensions escalated when defence lawyer Al Mohsin Touhid objected to remarks made by the prosecution. Several prosecution lawyers allegedly assaulted him, and his shirt was torn during the scuffle.

The situation was later brought under control with the intervention of Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi and defence lawyer Monir Hossain Sumon.

After the hearing resumed, the court rejected the bail petitions of Ayas and Rimi and ordered them to be sent to jail following the completion of their remand.

The two were among four people detained over the incident involving Tagore’s graffiti.

Police subsequently filed a case alleging criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity and hurting religious sentiments.

The courtroom clash disrupted the judicial proceedings and prompted the magistrate to temporarily withdraw to his private chamber. <Cite refs={[“turn561262search0″,”turn561262search9″,”turn561262search10”]}/>
