The prosecution at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) is nearly ready to submit formal charges against several former ministers and advisers over alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July 2024 mass uprising.

Prosecutor Gazi Monawar Hossain Tamim said on Wednesday that charges against several detained former ministers and advisers were almost ready for submission.

The cases involve former ministers Qamrul Islam, Rashed Khan Menon and Anisul Huq, as well as Salman F Rahman, a former adviser to then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Other high-profile cases involve Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Hasina’s son and former information and communication technology adviser, former state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak and Major General (relieved) Ziaul Ahsan.

The prosecution expects to complete the presentation of evidence in several key cases by December, the report said.

The proceedings relate to alleged crimes against humanity during the student-led mass uprising in July and August 2024, which culminated in the fall of the Awami League government on August 5.

The tribunal is hearing cases involving alleged killings and other abuses during the crackdown on the movement.

The accused are entitled to defend themselves against the allegations in court.

The progress of the cases marks a significant stage in the prosecution’s efforts to establish accountability for alleged atrocities committed during the uprising.
