The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested two people, including the husband of a woman whose body was recovered in a sack from a canal in Chattogram, and claimed to have solved the murder.
The arrestees are Raja Mia, also known as Raju, the victim’s husband, and Md Muslim Uddin, 39. The PBI also seized a sampan boat allegedly used in the killing.
At a press briefing on Thursday, PBI Chattogram Metropolitan Police Superintendent MKH Jahangir Hossain said the victim, Jannatul Ferdous, 28, worked at a shoe factory and lived with Raja and her seven-year-old daughter in Chattogram city.
Investigators said Raja planned the murder after learning that he had concealed his first marriage from Jannatul. On July 28, he allegedly took her to the Karnaphuli River area on the pretext of an outing. She was later strangled aboard a sampan, and her hands and legs were tied before her body was stuffed into a sack and dumped in the Shikalbaha canal.
Navy police recovered the body on August 2 near the Shikalbaha power plant. The victim’s mother later filed a murder case.
PBI arrested Muslim Uddin in Teknaf based on intelligence and digital evidence, then arrested the second suspect, Shujur Ahmed, 24, using information obtained from him. Muslim Uddin gave a confessional statement before a court on October 14.
