Sakhawat Ali Nobel, husband of actress Raima Islam Shimu, and his alleged accomplice SM Farhad have pleaded not guilty in the murder case of the actress.

After the hearing, the court set November 19 for the defence witnesses, said defence lawyer Shafiqul Islam.

Monday was scheduled for the accused to present their defence. Nobel and Farhad, who are in custody, were brought before the court. The judge read out the charges against them and asked whether they pleaded guilty or not guilty.

Both denied the charges, claiming they were innocent and seeking justice. When asked whether they would present defence witnesses, they said they would. The court then fixed November 19 for the defence testimony.

The prosecution concluded presenting its witnesses on October 6, with the court recording testimony from 20 witnesses.

On January 17, 2022, police recovered the body of an unidentified woman stuffed in a sack in Keraniganj, Dhaka. Later that night, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) identified her as Shimu through fingerprint analysis.

On January 18, Shimu’s brother, Harunur Rashid, filed a case with Keraniganj Police Station against her husband, Sakhawat Ali Nobel, and his childhood friend Farhad, along with several unidentified people.

After investigating the case, Inspector Shahidul Islam of Keraniganj Model Police Station submitted a charge sheet against Nobel and Farhad on August 29, 2022. Charges were formally framed against the two on November 29 that year, and their trial began.
