A Chattogram court on Wednesday placed alleged criminal Mobarak Hossain Imon, also known as David Imon, on a seven-day remand in two murder cases.
The court granted five days of remand in a murder case filed with Bakalia Police Station and two days in another case filed with Bayezid Bostami Police Station, said Mohammad Hasan Iqbal Chowdhury, deputy commissioner (prosecution) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP).
The remand hearings were held before Metropolitan Magistrate SM Alauddin Mahmud in the Bakalia case and Metropolitan Magistrate Md Alamgir Hossain in the Bayezid Bostami case.
David Imon was brought to court from jail around 12:30pm on Wednesday.
One of the cases relates to the killing of Sarwar Hossain Babla, a police-listed criminal, who was shot dead on November 5 last year during an election campaign for BNP candidate Ershad Ullah in the Chattogram-8 constituency. The incident took place in Khondokia Para of Chalitataly in the Bayezid Bostami area.
Two days after the incident, Babla’s father, Abdul Quader, filed a murder case, naming seven people, including Raihan and Imon, and accusing another 15 to 16 unidentified people.
The other case concerns the killing of two men in the Chandanpura area of Chawkbazar in the city. On March 30 last year, assailants chased a private car, stopped it and opened fire, killing two people and injuring two others.
The deceased were Bakhteyar Hossain Manik and Md Abdullah, both followers of Babla.
Three days after the killings, on April 1, Firoza Begum, mother of Manik, filed a case with Bakalia Police Station, naming seven accused, including Chhoto Sazzad and his wife Sharmin Akter Tamanna, Md Hasan, Mobarak Hossain Imon, Raihan and Borhan.
David Imon is an accused in at least 18 cases, including a double-murder case in Chattogram.
Police said he was arrested with three associates from a car in the Jhumjhum area on the Narail-Jashore highway in the early hours of July 29. The following day, he was shown arrested in three cases and sent to jail.
