A 62-year-old businessman was killed following a dispute over house rent at Azimpur Government Staff Quarters in the capital early Monday.

The victim, identified as Swapan, was allegedly assaulted during an argument over overdue rent around 4:00am. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in an unconscious state, where doctors declared him dead around 5:00am.

According to his elder brother Raja Mohammad Selim, Swapan lived with him in a rented flat in Building No. 4 of the quarters. Swapan, who had no wife or children, ran a cosmetics business.

Selim said the landlord’s son, Rizvi, had been expected to collect Tk 1,000 in outstanding rent the previous day.

Although attempts were made to contact him, he initially did not respond. Later, he called back asking them to keep the money ready. When Selim requested a few more days to pay, Rizvi allegedly used abusive language.

Around 4:00am, Rizvi arrived at the residence with his cousin Rohan. An argument soon escalated into a physical altercation, during which the two allegedly punched and pushed Swapan and Selim. Swapan was struck multiple times in the chest and knocked to the ground, leaving him unconscious.

The accused later took him to the hospital, where he was declared dead.

Sub-Inspector Kiran Mia of Lalbagh Police Station said the victim fell face down during the clash and sustained a head injury that caused bleeding. His body has been sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
