The Industrial Police has called for a permanent headquarters and increased manpower to better secure the country’s rapidly growing industrial sector.
Speaking to media, Additional Inspector General Gazi Jashim Uddin said both measures are now critical to ensure effective law enforcement and workplace stability across key industrial zones.
Despite being established in 2010, the force still operates from rented premises in Uttara, Dhaka. “A permanent headquarters is essential to enhance operational efficiency and support our expanding duties,” he said.
The manpower gap remains another major challenge.At present, the Industrial Police has around 3,470 personnel against an approved strength of 4,200. With industrial areas expanding rapidly, the shortage is limiting its ability to respond swiftly to labour unrest and ensure adequate security.
To strengthen field operations, the force has proposed setting up dedicated police lines in major industrial hubs, including Ashulia-Savar, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Chattogram and Mymensingh. Land has already been allocated, with designs currently being prepared.
Officials note that Bangladesh’s industrial landscape continues to expand, with nearly 6,000 ready-made garment factories employing over four million workers and generating an estimated $55–60 billion in annual exports.
Against this backdrop, Jashim Uddin stressed that strengthening infrastructure and boosting manpower will enable the force to better manage labour disputes, protect industrial assets and ensure a secure environment for both workers and investors.
