A 21-year-old inmate escaped from Kashimpur Central Women’s Prison only eight days after being admitted, triggering a major security scare and prompting an official investigation.
Rimpa, who was serving a three-month sentence in a CR case, allegedly escaped on Thursday evening by climbing a cornice beside the prison office building and scaling the boundary wall while carrying bricks inside the prison, according to prison sources.
Following the incident, authorities searched the prison and reviewed CCTV footage, which confirmed her escape.
Seven prison staff—three matrons and four female warders—have been suspended over alleged negligence. An investigation committee has also been formed.
Assistant Inspector General (Prisons) Jannatul Farhad said a case has been filed with Konabari Police Station and law enforcement agencies are working to recapture the fugitive.
Investigators have obtained a lead after Rimpa reportedly used a local resident’s mobile phone to contact her family.
Officials said inmates are required to be locked in by 5:00 pm. The delay in completing the lock-up procedure allowed the inmate to exploit the lapse and escape.
Konabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Iftekhar Hossain confirmed that a general diary (GD) has been filed by the prison superintendent and a search operation is underway to arrest the escaped inmate.
