The High Court Division of the Supreme Court has disposed of a total of 34,846 long-pending cases in eight working days under a special initiative aimed at reducing the case backlog.
The information was disclosed by Supreme Court Public Relations Officer Md Shafiqul Islam on Saturday.
He said that on July 16, the High Court’s criminal motion benches disposed of 6,317 old criminal miscellaneous cases, while the writ motion bench disposed of 23 old writ petitions, bringing the total number of cases disposed of that day to 6,340.
So far, the special initiative has resulted in the disposal of 27,939 old criminal miscellaneous cases and 6,907 old writ cases, taking the total number of resolved cases to 34,846 over eight working days.
The Supreme Court said the special drive is being carried out in line with the directives of the Chief Justice, with criminal motion and writ motion benches giving priority to long-pending cases.
The initiative aims to ensure speedy justice for litigants, reduce the backlog of cases and enhance the efficiency of the judicial system.
The special programme began on May 7, under which different benches of the High Court Division dedicate one day each week to disposing of old criminal miscellaneous and writ cases.
The Supreme Court said the initiative to clear long-pending cases will continue in the future.
