Two men posing as Detective Branch (DB) officers were detained by locals in Savar on Tuesday for allegedly defrauding a woman of Tk 7 lakh from her son’s bKash account.
The detainees were identified as Monir, a resident of Mirpur in Dhaka, and Aminul Islam of Madhupur in Tangail.
According to locals, the duo introduced themselves as DB officers in the Kalma area under Savar Sadar Union and allegedly intimidated a woman before taking her fingerprint on a mobile phone under a pretext.
They allegedly used the biometric authentication to fraudulently withdraw Tk 7 lakh from a bKash wallet belonging to the woman’s son.
Growing suspicious, local residents contacted the local DB office and learned that no officers by those names were posted there.
The residents then detained the two men and handed them over to police.
Police suspect the detainees may be involved in bKash fraud and other cybercrimes.
Nur Mohammad, inspector (investigation) of Savar Model Police Station, said police were investigating the incident and legal action would be taken based on the findings.
