The High Court (HC) has achieved a historic milestone by disposing of 7,853 long-pending criminal miscellaneous cases in a single day, marking the highest number of such cases cleared in a day in the court’s history.
The record was set on July 23 through the combined efforts of 10 criminal motion benches as part of a special case disposal drive launched under the directive of Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, according to a Supreme Court press release issued on Saturday.
The initiative forms part of a broader judicial reform aimed at reducing the longstanding backlog of cases and ensuring faster access to justice.
Since the special drive began on May 7, the High Court has disposed of 42,699 pending cases in just nine working days. Of these, 35,792 were old criminal miscellaneous cases, reflecting the judiciary’s intensified efforts to clear years of accumulated case backlogs.
Supreme Court Public Relations Officer Md Shafiqul Islam said the campaign was undertaken to expedite the delivery of justice, improve judicial efficiency and provide relief to thousands of litigants whose cases had remained pending for years.
He said the disposal of such a large number of old cases demonstrates the judiciary’s commitment to enhancing the effectiveness of the justice system and reducing delays in court proceedings.
The special drive is expected to continue as part of the judiciary’s ongoing efforts to improve case management and restore public confidence in the judicial process by ensuring quicker resolution of long-pending cases.
