Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapno has said the country’s media is currently operating more freely than at any time in the past.
He said the current government has imposed no restrictions on independent journalism.
The minister made the remarks at an event marking the fifth founding anniversary of the Journalists’ Protection and Welfare Foundation on Wednesday (August 19).
He said journalists’ job is to question those in power and that this role must continue. However, he urged everyone to remain vigilant against those who engage in unethical journalism in the name of journalism.
“Those who previously worked as accomplices of fascists in the name of journalism have been brought to justice by the government,” he said.
The minister also said the government is working to create a new ecosystem for the media.
