The government has appointed journalist Umme Marufa as First Secretary (Press) at the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata on a one-year contractual basis.
A gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on Monday confirmed the appointment, which will take effect from the date of her joining.
Marufa is currently serving as a special correspondent at private television channel News24.
She replaces Md Tariqul Islam Bhuiyan, widely known as Tarique Choyon, who recently resigned from the post citing personal and professional reasons.
In a Facebook post, Choyon said he had spent a “wonderful” year and a half in Kolkata and carried out his responsibilities with sincerity.
He also expressed hope of writing a book in the future about his professional experiences, colleagues, and life in Kolkata.
