The founding Board of Trustees of Capital University of Bangladesh held a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity on Wednesday, calling for the immediate intervention of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to resolve an ongoing crisis, reopen the institution, and order an independent investigation.
Addressing reporters, the Chairman of the founding Trust, Md. Alim Uddin Laskar, alleged that a separate trust formed in 2015 has illegally claimed ownership of the university—which was originally established in 2012—and maintained unlawful control over its operations.
Laskar claimed that an illegal takeover recently transpired when outsiders vandalized the campus, occupied the premises, and chanted political slogans. The university was subsequently closed indefinitely, a move the founding trustees argue directly contravenes the Private University Act and official UGC regulations.
Speakers at the press conference expressed deep frustration over the lack of progress in resolving the dispute, despite clear directives from the Ministry of Education. The board alleged that certain officials failed to maintain neutrality, allowing administrative overreach, document forgery, and financial corruption to compromise the institution.
According to the founding trustees, comprehensive documentary evidence detailing these irregularities has already been submitted to both the Ministry of Education and the UGC.
The board urged the government, the Ministry of Education, and the UGC to step in promptly to reopen the campus, allow students to resume their studies, conduct an impartial inquiry into the unrest, and initiate legal proceedings against those responsible.
