Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman has said the July movement was not the achievement of any individual or a single political party, but the result of the collective efforts of all pro-democracy forces in Bangladesh.
He urged all stakeholders to refrain from claiming sole credit for the movement or attempting to undermine the contributions of others.
Ruman made the remarks on Saturday while presiding over a discussion and photo exhibition titled “Bangladesh in the Face of Bullets, The End of Fascism,” organised by Amra BNP Poribar and the Bangladesh Photo Journalists Association (BPJA) at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan attended the programme as the chief guest.
Addressing the event, the Additional Press Secretary said the struggle for democracy in Bangladesh was built on the sacrifices of many individuals and political forces over the years.
He said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia had endured imprisonment and torture during the movement to restore democracy, while BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman had also suffered what he described as inhumane torture and had spent more than 15 years in exile.
Ruman stressed that the sacrifices made by democratic forces should be acknowledged collectively and said preserving the true history of the July movement was essential for future generations.
The discussion was attended by political leaders, journalists, photographers and members of civil society, who reflected on the events of the July movement and paid tribute to those who sacrificed in the struggle for democracy.
