At least 11 research papers linked to Jashore University of Science and Technology (JSTU) have been retracted from international journals over allegations of plagiarism and serious irregularities, with two papers involving former vice-chancellor Prof Md Abdul Majid.
Prof Majid, also a professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Dhaka, was appointed the fourth vice-chancellor of JSTU on September 23, 2024. About eight months earlier, in January of the same year, two papers co-authored by him were retracted by publisher Hindawi.
One of the withdrawn studies analysed the antioxidant properties of locally produced moringa seed extract, while another focused on the use of cellulose-based nanocomposites to remove harmful substances and protect biological molecules.
The issue gained attention after a report published on Saturday revealed that at least 325 research papers involving Bangladeshi researchers were retracted between 2019 and June 2026 due to allegations of misconduct.
According to Hindawi’s investigation, the retracted studies contained fabricated data, with no evidence of necessary laboratory experiments to support the findings. The publisher also found that the papers were produced through so-called “paper mills”—networks that create or sell research articles for publication in exchange for money.
The investigation further alleged manipulation of the peer-review process through the use of false information, misleading the publisher during the evaluation stage. Hindawi stated that the authors’ explanations were not satisfactory.
Prof Majid, however, told media that he was not contacted regarding the retractions and that his role in the research was limited to sharing conceptual ideas.
Between May 2024 and March 2026, 10 research papers involving JSTU teachers and students were retracted. Another paper was withdrawn in May this year, bringing the total to 11.
The revelations have sparked widespread discussion, with many academics sharing the report on social media. Researchers say such misconduct is treated as a serious ethical breach in Western academia, often leading to strict disciplinary action.
Several researchers from other public and private universities in Bangladesh have also been linked to retracted papers, including those from BUET, Jagannath University, Comilla University, Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University, Bangladesh University of Professionals, BRAC University, East West University, and others.
