Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized Indian cumin, fuchka, blankets and other smuggled goods worth around Tk10 million in separate operations in Habiganj.
Two covered vans allegedly used to transport the contraband were also seized during the drives conducted by Habiganj-55 BGB over the past 24 hours.
Acting on a tip-off that a covered van was being used to carry illegal Indian goods, BGB personnel set up a temporary checkpoint near Bejura bus stop in Madhabpur upazila.
Around 1am on Friday, smugglers reportedly abandoned the van by the roadside after sensing the presence of BGB personnel and fled the scene.
A subsequent search of the abandoned vehicle led to the recovery of a large quantity of Indian cumin packed in sacks. The van was also seized.
In a separate operation the same day, BGB members seized Indian blankets from another covered van in the Satchhari Chaklapunji tea garden area along the old Dhaka-Sylhet highway.
Meanwhile, patrol teams from the Sindurkhan and Kakmaraichhara Border Outposts conducted separate searches in the border areas of Jamburachhara and Lombatila. They recovered around 846kg of Indian fuchka and five bottles of foreign liquor, which were found abandoned.
Habiganj-55 BGB Commander Lt Col Md Tanzilur Rahman confirmed the seizures, saying the confiscated goods and liquor were being processed for handover to the relevant authorities.
