Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu has said the government will take all necessary measures to ensure that residents of Banshkhali no longer face recurring floods each year.
Speaking to journalists during a visit to flood-affected areas in Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram on Saturday (August 8), he said many canals in the region have been encroached upon and polluted over the years, severely disrupting natural water flow. As a result, even normal rainfall causes widespread flooding.
“To address this, canals will be excavated and re-excavated to restore proper water flow, allowing floodwaters to recede quickly,” he said. He also announced plans to build sustainable embankments to protect homes from flash floods caused by runoff from nearby hills.
The Minister’s visit comes ahead of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s scheduled trip to Chattogram on Sunday (August 9), where he is expected to take part in multiple programmes, including distributing relief and overseeing the construction of homes for flood victims.
Later, Dulu inspected the venue of the Prime Minister’s public rally at Baharchhara in the upazila.
Local lawmaker Principal Zahirul Islam and BNP leader Mishkatul Islam Chowdhury Pappa, among others, were present during the visit.
