An eight-year-old boy has died after suffering severe burns in a gas explosion caused by a suspected leak in Narayanganj’s Bandar upazila, while his parents remain in critical condition.
The victim, Maruf, died on Saturday afternoon at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, where he had been undergoing treatment. His parents, Maidul Islam (28) and Beauty Akter, are still receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) with life-threatening injuries.
Resident physician Dr Shawon Bin Rahman confirmed the death to Media.
The explosion occurred early Friday morning in a tin-shed rented house in the Kuripara Chapatali area of Ward No. 27 in Bandar. Maidul, a mason by profession, lived there with his wife and son.
According to the Fire Service and local residents, gas from a leaking pipeline had accumulated inside the room. With the windows closed, the gas could not escape. The explosion is believed to have been triggered when Maidul lit a cigarette, igniting the trapped gas.
Neighbours rushed to the scene after hearing the blast and rescued all three in critical condition before taking them to the burn institute in the capital.
Doctors said Maidul suffered burns to 85 percent of his body, Beauty Akter 80 percent, and Maruf 90 percent. All three were being treated in the ICU, where the child later succumbed to his injuries.
The explosion also caused significant damage to the tin-shed house, with parts of the roof and walls destroyed. Household items, including bedding and the ceiling structure, were burned, and the blades of a ceiling fan were bent from the impact.
