Veteran journalist and freedom fighter Mrinal Krishna Roy, a member of the National Press Club and Dhaka Reporters Unity, died at a hospital in the capital on Sunday morning. He was 84.
He is survived by his wife, two sons and a host of relatives, friends, colleagues and well-wishers.
Roy began his journalism career in 1965 with The Pakistan Observer, launching a professional journey that spanned more than six decades and witnessed some of the country’s most significant political and social transformations.
During his long career, he worked for several leading media organisations, including the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), The Financial Express and the now-defunct Bangladesh Times.
He was also a freedom fighter who took part in Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971.
Colleagues remembered Roy as a dedicated journalist who remained closely connected with the professional community throughout his career. His association with the National Press Club and Dhaka Reporters Unity continued until his death.
A memorial tribute was held at the National Press Club at noon on Sunday, where fellow journalists and members of the media community paid their respects to the veteran journalist.
Following the tribute, his last rites were performed at the Postogola Crematorium in the capital.
National Press Club President Hasan Hafiz and General Secretary Ayub Bhuiyan expressed deep grief at Roy’s death.
In a joint statement, they recalled his contribution to journalism and expressed sympathy to his bereaved family. They also prayed for the eternal peace of his departed soul and conveyed their condolences to his family members.
Roy’s death marks the passing of a journalist whose professional life began before Bangladesh’s independence and continued through decades of profound change in the country’s media landscape.
