The Canadian government has updated its travel advisory for Bangladesh, warning of political tensions, protests and the risk of clashes in the South Asian country. It has also maintained its advice to avoid all travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts due to security risks.
Canada updated its travel advisory on August 10, continuing to place Bangladesh under a recommendation to “exercise a high degree of caution.”
According to the advisory, protests, clashes and civil unrest could occur at any time amid political tensions, judicial proceedings and political gatherings.
The Canadian government warned that demonstrations could suddenly disrupt traffic and business activities and could escalate into violent confrontations. It advised Canadian citizens in Bangladesh to avoid large gatherings and demonstrations and to follow instructions issued by local authorities.
The travel warning is stricter for the Chittagong Hill Tracts, where Canada continues to advise against all travel. The advisory cites risks including political violence, kidnapping and armed clashes in the region.
Canadian citizens already in Bangladesh or planning to visit have been advised to monitor local media regularly and remain prepared for sudden changes in the security situation.
The Canadian government has also urged travellers to check its official website for the latest information before travelling to Bangladesh.
Canada has issued travel advisories on Bangladesh several times in recent years, including updates in September and December last year, reflecting concerns over the country’s political and security environment.
