The online e-bail bond system has been introduced in 12 more districts, bringing the total number of districts covered by the digital service to 28.
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman inaugurated the system in the new districts at a programme held at the ministry’s conference room on Thursday (August 13).
The minister said the government was taking various timely initiatives to reduce harassment of litigants and strengthen the rule of law, justice and good governance, with the e-bail bond system being an important part of that effort.
Under the traditional system, submitting and completing a bail bond involves 12 steps, whereas the digital system reduces the process to just two. Lawyers can submit bail bonds online from their chambers or any location using smartphones, with acceptance confirmed instantly through a one-time password (OTP).
The system is expected to reduce repeated visits by released accused persons and their families to prisons, magistrate courts and district judge courts. It will also improve transparency, accountability and efficiency in bail-related procedures.
The minister said the system had already been introduced in 16 districts, where around 120,000 e-bail bonds have been submitted online over the past few months, demonstrating its effectiveness and demand.
The 12 newly added districts are Tangail, Kishoreganj, Munshiganj, Cox’s Bazar, Chandpur, Rangamati, Sirajganj, Bagerhat, Patuakhali, Habiganj, Thakurgaon and Jamalpur.
As part of broader judicial reforms, the government is also focusing on mediation, legal aid and reducing case backlogs while increasing the rate of case disposal, the minister said.
He urged judges, lawyers and prison authorities to coordinate with district legal aid offices when prisoners are detained in compoundable or compromiseable cases, so that necessary steps can be taken quickly. Faster resolution of such cases, he said, could reduce delays in the justice system and save significant public funds.
The minister added that the Law Ministry was considering rewarding officials in districts that achieve notable success in reducing pending cases and increasing disposal rates over the next year.
