The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has introduced an automated traffic signal system on a pilot basis at Shahbagh intersection as part of efforts to ease traffic congestion and modernise traffic management in the capital.
DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam inaugurated the system at Shahbagh intersection on Thursday.
Speaking at the inauguration, Salam said severe traffic congestion is one of the major problems in the city, causing significant loss of working hours every day.
The automated, technology-driven signal system has been introduced to help reduce congestion and improve traffic management, he said.
The DSCC administrator said plans have been taken to introduce automated traffic signals at 20 major intersections in Dhaka.
Initially, eight key intersections under the DSCC have been selected for the system: Banglamotor, Hotel InterContinental, Minto Road, Kakrail Circle, Matsya Bhaban, Kadam Chattar, Shiksha Bhaban and Shahbagh.
Salam said the initiative would be expanded further, with automated traffic signals planned for another 50 major intersections across Dhaka in the coming months.
Of these, 22 intersections will fall under the DSCC area.
Urging residents and motorists to cooperate, he called for an end to random roadside parking and stressed compliance with traffic signals and road laws.
He also urged drivers and pedestrians to follow warning signs, road markings, zebra crossings and designated lanes.
He further called for intersections to remain free of obstructions and makeshift shops.
Senior officials from the DSCC, Dhaka Metropolitan Police and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) attended the inauguration ceremony.
