An apparently mentally distressed woman gave birth at a passenger shelter at the Rahmatpur bus stand in Babuganj upazila of Barishal on Friday morning.
Local residents said the woman had been staying around the Rahmatpur bus stand, bridge and nearby areas for several days. She suddenly went into labour and delivered the baby inside the passenger shelter.
Local businessman Md Liton Hossain was among the first to notice the situation. He and others used pieces of cloth and banners to provide privacy for the mother and newborn, while informing the Babuganj upazila administration and the Department of Social Services.
On receiving the information, Babuganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Asmaul Husna quickly reached the scene. She arranged for the mother and newborn to be taken to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for better medical care.
The UNO told media that, after receiving the information from local residents, she personally arranged for both the mother and newborn to be sent to the hospital for treatment.
Local residents praised the authorities and community members for ensuring immediate medical attention and protection for the vulnerable woman and her newborn.
They called for continued medical care, safety and necessary support for both.
