Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam on Saturday inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for several education and public health projects in Tangail’s Madhupur upazila during the second day of his two-day visit to the constituency.
The minister began the day’s programme by visiting the grave of former Jubo Dal leader Sohel Talukder and meeting his family members, assuring them of his continued support.
He later laid the foundation stone of a 100,000-litre water reservoir beside Kakraid High School under a project of the Department of Public Health Engineering. Officials said the facility will provide uninterrupted arsenic-free drinking water to more than 300 residents.
During the visit, students of Kakraid High School raised several concerns with the minister, prompting him to make an unscheduled visit to the campus. He spoke with students, assured them that their problems would be addressed on a priority basis and encouraged them to pursue their education with dedication and patriotism.
Anam also inaugurated newly constructed four-storey academic buildings at Jatabari Fazil (Degree) Madrasa, Gangair Nazmul Islam Fazil Madrasa, Madhupur Adarsha Islamia Kamil Madrasa and Shalikha Fazil Madrasa.
At the ceremonies, local representatives sought government recognition for Gangair Nazmul Islam Fazil Madrasa and requested the establishment of a computer laboratory and a separate prayer space for female students at Shalikha Fazil Madrasa.
Responding to the demands, the minister said he had observed the poor condition of roads and educational institutions across the constituency during his tour.
“Everywhere I have gone, people have handed me long lists of demands. The question is, what did the previous government do over the past 17 years?” he said.
He acknowledged that all demands could not be fulfilled immediately but assured residents that development projects would be implemented gradually with public cooperation.
The minister also announced a zero-tolerance policy against extortion, corruption, irregularities and gambling, urging local administrators and party leaders to take firm action against those involved.
“We will not allow the development plans of the honourable Prime Minister to be undermined because of a handful of wrongdoers,” he said.
Outside his official schedule, Anam attended the funeral prayer of labour leader and former ward commissioner Mizanur Rahman Mizan in Dhanbari upazila. He also met local BNP leaders and representatives of the Sri Sri Nityananda Seba and Orphanage Ashram, directing officials to address their concerns promptly.
Highlighting the government’s priorities, the minister said improving education, expanding modern academic infrastructure and ensuring access to safe drinking water remained central to its development agenda.
He also said public examinations were being conducted transparently and without malpractice to ensure fair assessment of students.
Anam added that continued investment in education, healthcare, communications and public infrastructure would contribute significantly to improving the quality of life for people in Madhupur.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Jubayer Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Madhupur Police Station Md Zafar Iqbal, Tangail BNP President Hasanuzzaman Shaheen, government officials, local public representatives, teachers, students and other distinguished citizens were present at the programmes.
