A new pay scale for government employees will be implemented within this year, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said on Monday.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting at the Finance Ministry in the Secretariat, the minister said several aspects of the proposed pay scale were still under discussion and that more consultations would be held before a final decision is made.
“There are many aspects of the pay commission. All of them are being considered. We discussed them today, but more discussion is needed. Another meeting will be held later,” Khosru said.
Asked whether the new pay scale would be introduced this year, he replied, “The new pay scale will be implemented within this year.”
The minister said the government had not yet finalised measures to contain inflation following implementation of the new pay structure. Details will be announced once a comprehensive decision is reached, he added.
The ninth National Pay Commission was formed on July 27, 2025, nearly 12 years after the eighth commission. Headed by former finance secretary Zakir Ahmed Khan, the 23-member commission submitted its report to then Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on January 21 this year.
The commission recommended retaining the existing 20 grades while increasing salaries and allowances for government employees by 100–140 percent.
Later, on April 21, a 10-member committee headed by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani was formed to recommend the implementation of the new pay structure.
The committee has now finalised a draft based on the pay commission’s recommendations and subsequent reviews. The draft is awaiting presentation to the Cabinet, after which the government may formally announce the long-awaited ninth pay scale.
