Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has said street vendors will not be allowed to operate on the city’s main roads, but registered vendors may be permitted to do business on selected roads with sufficiently wide footpaths.
The designated areas must preserve at least 1.5 metres (about five feet) of clear space for pedestrians.
The remaining vendors will be accommodated through holiday and night markets, according to DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam.
The policy requires vendors to register and renew their registration regularly.
A one-time registration fee is Tk 5,000, while the annual renewal fee is Tk 2,500 and the monthly charge for space use and waste management is Tk 3,000.
Registered vendors will receive digital identity cards containing a barcode or QR code specifying their designated location and operating hours.
The policy also reserves 30% of allocated spaces for women and persons with disabilities.
The DSCC administrator said the corporation does not want to deprive vendors of their livelihoods but stressed that a structured system is needed to ensure unobstructed movement for city residents.
