A low-pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas has intensified into a monsoon depression, which may move further northwest, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
The system is likely to bring rain and thundershowers across various parts of the country, with moderate to very heavy rainfall possible in some areas.
In its forecast valid until 6pm Tuesday, August 18, the Met Office said the monsoon axis extends from Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar through the depression’s centre and southern Bangladesh to Assam.
The monsoon is currently active over Bangladesh and strong over the north Bay of Bengal.
Most areas of Khulna, Barishal, Rajshahi, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions may experience rain. Many areas of Rangpur, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions may also see light to moderate rain or thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty winds.
Moderate to very heavy rainfall may occur at places across the country. The rain could lower daytime temperatures by 1–2°C, while nighttime temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged.
For the following 24 hours from 6pm Tuesday, rain is also forecast in many areas of all eight divisions. Light to moderate rain or thundershowers, along with temporary gusty winds, may affect Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.
Moderate to very heavy rainfall may again occur in some areas, while both daytime and nighttime temperatures are likely to remain nearly unchanged.
