Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has left for New York to attend the Fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS V), which will be held at the UN Headquarters on July 7-8.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the home minister will attend the inaugural session at the UN General Assembly Hall on July 8, along with several plenary sessions.
This year’s summit will focus on three key themes: the future of UN policing, innovation and emerging technologies in UN policing, and strengthening international cooperation to address transnational challenges.
The home minister will also attend a high-level dinner on the sidelines of the conference.
During his visit, the home minister is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with UN Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support Atul Khare, Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, and Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary A. DiCarlo. He is also expected to meet home ministers from several other countries.
According to the ministry, the meetings will discuss Bangladesh’s contributions to UN peacekeeping operations, the participation and capacity-building of Bangladesh Police, deployment of specialised police units, future peacekeeping priorities, and other issues of mutual interest.
The home minister is leading a five-member Bangladesh delegation, which also includes Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir.
The home minister departed Dhaka for New York on an Emirates Airlines flight in the early hours of Saturday and is scheduled to return home on July 12.
