A 25-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by a mob in Khulna on Tuesday evening after locals suspected him of being a child abductor.
The incident took place around 6:30pm in Rayermohol area under Aranghata Police Station in the city.
The deceased was identified as Raju Shikdar, son of Nazrul Biswas of Phultala upazila in Khulna.
Police said Raju was walking through the area with a child. Preliminary information suggests that he was previously acquainted with the child. At one point, some locals became suspicious that he was attempting to abduct the child and detained him before allegedly beating him.
On information, police rushed to the spot and rescued Raju in critical condition. He was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Sonadanga Zone) Md Humayun Kabir said police were investigating the incident to determine what had actually happened.
“Those responsible will face legal action, regardless of who they are,” he said.
