Barrister Tawfique Nawaz, husband of former education minister Dr Dipu Moni, died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday night.
He died at around 10:30pm on August 18 at Continental Hospital in the capital. He was 76. His death was confirmed by family members and Dipu Moni’s lawyer.
Nawaz had been suffering from health complications for several years. He reportedly suffered a stroke in 2019 and had been receiving treatment for a prolonged period.
Despite his illness, he visited his wife at a court proceeding in a wheelchair earlier this year.
Dipu Moni, a former foreign, education and social welfare minister, is currently in custody at Munshiganj District Jail in connection with several cases.
Her lawyer said an application would be submitted seeking her release on parole so that she could attend her husband’s funeral.
Nawaz was a practicing lawyer at the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.
