The government has approved a new private university in Thakurgaon, taking the total number of approved private universities in Bangladesh to 117.
Named Eco University of Science and Technology (EUST), the institution will conduct academic activities in the East Nargun area of Sadar upazila.
The Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Education Ministry approved the establishment on Monday and informed university founder and chairman Muhammad Shahid Uz Zaman through an official letter.
Mahbubul Haque Patowari, additional secretary (universities) at the division, confirmed the development.
The university has been granted temporary approval for seven years, subject to 31 conditions. These include having at least 25,000 square feet of owned or rented academic space, a minimum of three faculties and six departments, and at least Tk 1.5 crore deposited in a reserved fund at a scheduled bank in the university’s name.
Founder and Chairman Muhammad Shahid Uz Zaman said EUST would go beyond offering academic degrees and focus on developing skilled human resources, promoting modern research and nurturing young entrepreneurs.
“Our vision is to move from education to skills, skills to innovation and innovation to employment,” he said.
Bangladesh began approving private universities in 1992.
The government has previously approved the establishment of Thakurgaon University, a public institution, as well as a new government medical college in the district.
