The Government and Politics Alumni Association of Jahangirnagar University has accorded a reception to Professor Md Shamsul Alam Selim following his appointment as the university’s pro-vice-chancellor (academic).
The programme was held at the seminar room of the university auditorium on Friday and was attended by former and current students, teachers and alumni of the department.
Professor Shamsul Alam Selim, who is also president of the Government and Politics Alumni Association, was congratulated by alumni and students who shared their memories and experiences with him and expressed their appreciation for his contributions to the department and the university.
Speaking at the event, reception committee convener and graduate senate member Sabina Easmin described Professor Selim as more than a teacher.
‘Professor Shamsul Alam Selim is not only a teacher; he is a guardian to us. During different movements and struggles, he stood beside students and alumni with courage, affection and humanity. Personally, I have always received his support and cooperation during difficult times,’ she said.
She added that the reception was an expression of the respect and affection alumni and students hold for him.
‘His sincerity, sacrifice and humanity continue to inspire us. As a former student of the department, I feel proud and wish him good health and a long life,’ Sabina said.
Addressing the audience, Professor Selim said he was deeply moved by the honour.
‘Today’s recognition has truly overwhelmed me. I have not yet become worthy of the immense love and respect you have shown me,’ he said.
He acknowledged the contributions of teachers, colleagues and former and current students of the department to his personal and professional achievements.
‘It was from this department that I learned to stand against injustice, uphold truth and work with integrity,’ he said.
Referring to his new administrative role, he said he viewed the appointment not as a personal achievement but as a reflection of the trust and affection of the university community.
‘With your blessings and support, I want to work towards establishing good governance and a positive academic environment at the university. I also seek everyone’s cooperation in making the activities of the alumni association more dynamic and successful in the future,’ he added.
Among others, former department teacher Professor Nasim Akter Hossain, Professor Md Abdul Mannan, current faculty members, acting director of the university’s public relations office Mohammad Mohiuddin Sumon, deputy director of the physical education office and officers’ association president Md Azmal Amin Tutul, deputy registrar Md Abdur Rahman Babul, as well as journalists, academics, athletes and businesspeople from different sectors attended the programme.
