A Dhaka court has placed 15 more activists of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations on one-day remand over an alleged plot to carry out sabotage and violent activities around August 15.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Riyad Hasan passed the remand order on Sunday following a petition from the investigation officer.
Prosecution police sub-inspector Kamal Hossain confirmed the development.
The accused are Limon Khan, Dewan Ismail, Fahim Mia, Ratan, Rakib alias Rafi, Ratul Shil, Minarul Mia, Masud Rana alias Limu, Jihad Hasan, Abu Saim alias Sayem Babu, Fahim, Shakil Mia, Rajib, Sani and Rajon Mia.
Police said the 15 were among 54 people arrested from a house in Dhaka’s Bashundhara Residential Area on August 13. Two of those arrested were juveniles.
According to police, the group was allegedly planning sabotage and terrorist activities centring on August 15.
The day after the arrests, all 54 suspects were produced before the court. Police sought custody of 52 of them and placement of the two juveniles in juvenile development centres. The court approved the applications.
On August 19, the court granted three-day remand to 15 other suspects from the same case, including several leaders and activists of the Jubo League.
Police had also sought remand for the latest 15 suspects at that time, but the court scheduled Sunday for a hearing in their presence.
The accused were produced before the court on Sunday. Defence lawyer Islam Mia Rakib sought cancellation of the remand and bail for his clients.
After hearing both sides, the court granted police one day’s remand for the 15 accused.
