Eid-e-Miladunnabi, marking the birth and life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), will be observed across Bangladesh on Wednesday, August 26, as a public holiday.
The government’s 2026 holiday calendar lists the day as a general holiday. Here is a quick look at what will remain open and closed on the occasion.
According to Bangladesh Bank’s 2026 holiday calendar, all banks and financial institutions will remain closed on Wednesday. Regular branch transactions will therefore be suspended.
Customers should check with their respective banks for the availability of ATM, mobile banking and online banking services during the holiday.
The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) will also remain closed on Wednesday. Its 2026 holiday calendar lists August 26 as a holiday for Eid-e-Miladunnabi, meaning there will be no trading on the day.
Government primary schools, as well as public and private secondary and lower-secondary schools, will remain closed in line with their respective 2026 holiday calendars.
The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) has also instructed educational institutions to organise programmes marking Eid-e-Miladunnabi in line with the national programme.
The Directorate of Madrasa Education issued separate instructions on Monday regarding observance of the occasion.
Despite the public holiday, Dhaka’s metro rail service will remain operational.
According to the current schedule of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), metro rail operates according to a separate timetable on public holidays. Passengers are advised to check the latest DMTCL notice before travelling.
There is no single government schedule governing the opening and closing hours of all shops, shopping malls and private establishments on public holidays.
People planning to visit a particular market or shopping mall should therefore check its own announcement or schedule beforehand.
Various government offices and educational institutions will organise programmes marking Eid-e-Miladunnabi in accordance with the national programme.
The Islamic Foundation is also organising a month-long Islamic book fair at the southern gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. The fair has 61 stalls and remains open to visitors daily from 11am to 8pm.
The national emergency service 999 will remain available for police, fire service and ambulance assistance. According to Bangladesh Police, the service is free of charge.
People heading out on Wednesday are advised to check the latest notices from transport operators, banks, markets and other establishments before travelling.
