The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has suspended, until further notice, the collection of parking fees at the newly constructed car parking area beneath Babubazar Bridge in Ward No. 32.
The suspension applies to the ongoing lease and khas collection activities across 28,051.12 square feet of open space, divided into four blocks—from A to D.
The decision came after a report published in Jugantar on August 25, titled “Public Extortion Using City Corporation Tokens in Babubazar”, which, according to an official DSCC order, damaged the city corporation’s image.
The office order clearly stated that no individual or organisation will be allowed to collect parking fees at the site while the suspension remains in force. It also warned that legal action would be taken against anyone found violating the directive.
A senior official of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s traffic department, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the newly developed parking area could play an important role in reducing traffic congestion in the busy Babubazar area.
