BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi paid tribute to National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at his grave on the Dhaka University campus on Thursday, marking the poet’s 50th death anniversary.
Rizvi placed a wreath at the poet’s grave in the morning and said Nazrul had been one of the main sources of inspiration for Bangladesh’s independence movement and various struggles, including the 2024 mass uprising.
“Throughout his life, Kazi Nazrul Islam spoke out against injustice.
He taught people to protest against oppression and persecution,” Rizvi said.
He said Nazrul remained an inspiration for movements and struggles, adding that his writings continued to encourage people to stand against any threat to the country’s sovereignty.
The tribute programme was organised by the Dhaka University unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
Leaders of the organisation, including its university unit president Ganesh Chandra Ray Sahas and general secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon, were present on the occasion.
Kazi Nazrul Islam died on August 27, 1976, and was buried beside the Dhaka University Central Mosque with state honours.
